Manchester United is considering activating Alvarez's buyback clause

According to Portuguese media outlet *O Jogo*, Erik ten Hag is eager to strengthen his defensive line. Álvaro Fernández has been performing exceptionally well for Benfica in Portugal and has been linked with a return to the Premier League, with both Real Madrid and Barcelona also monitoring the Spanish U21 international.

The 21-year-old fullback is under contract until June 2029 and has made seven appearances for Benfica, helping the team keep three clean sheets. Fernández has played an important role in Roger Schmidt’s squad, contributing to Benfica’s rise to third place in the early stages of the season.

He has also been crucial in the UEFA Champions League, helping the team secure victories over Red Star Belgrade and Atlético Madrid. As a Spanish U21 international, his performances have not gone unnoticed, with reports suggesting that Manchester United is among the clubs keeping a close eye on his progress.

In fact, according to *O Jogo*, his former club Manchester United is considering activating the buyback clause in his contract. Earlier this year, United loaned the left-back to Benfica in January, with an option to buy for £5 million. Benfica decided to make the move permanent this summer, but now Dan Ashworth may be looking to bring him back to Old Trafford.

*O Jogo* also reveals that Real Madrid and Barcelona are “closely monitoring” the Spanish player. Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia have struggled to stay fit for a while, forcing Ten Hag to use Diogo Dalot or Noussair Mazraoui as makeshift left-backs.
