Newcastle United urged to revisit £35 million transfer

Newcastle United have been urged to revisit their interest in Everton striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the January transfer window as the need for a new striker becomes ever clearer.

Toon boss Eddie Howe has been left to play Anthony Gordon up top after injuries to Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson.

Calvert-Lewin was a target for the Magpies in the summer and brief talks were believed to have happened but amounted to nothing after no fee could be agreed. The forward's contract is up in the summer and there is a belief that United could potentially grab themselves a bargain if Everton cannot persuade him to sign a new deal.

The 27-year-old is not thought to be overly keen to stay beyond the summer, and Everton are thought to be open to selling the striker in January as opposed to losing him on a free in the summer.

On the back of Newcastle's nil-nil draw with Everton at Goodison Park last weekend, The Everything is Black and White Podcast host Andrew Musgrove was left impressed enough to urge United to consider going back in for Calvert-Lewin.

"I was watching Dominic Calvert-Lewin quite closely, and I thought he was quite impressive. He's out contractor in the summer - could you get in a little cheeky deal in January? Do you cash in on Callum Wilson, you say, 'look, sell him for eight million because of his injury record. You get Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who looks like he's got past whatever was holding him back.

"He played 30-odd games last season and he has started this season all right. Put him up against [Alexander] Isak to compete with him and you may get him for a decent enough price in January. Everton wanted £35m-£40 million this summer but if you can get him for £15m-£20 million in January or do what some teams do and negotiate that free transfer for the summer, it could be a good deal."

Calvert-Lewin is often thought as an injury prone striker having missed 42 Premier League games over the 2021-2023 campaigns - but last year played 39 games for The Toffees hitting eight goals. This season his tally stands at two goals in seven.

However, podcast co-host Aaron Stokes does not believe Calvert-Lewin would be worth the financial outlay.
